In April 2007, I visited Seattle and spend a day touring the Virginia Mason Health System (VMHS). Over the last seven years, under the leadership of their CEO, Gary Kaplan MD, VMHS has implemented a significant quality improvement effort that has paid dividends in error reduction and streamlining. My original 40 minute interview with Dr. Kaplan was distilled down to 6 minutes for purposes of this video, which was shown during the opening Executive Session of the World Health Care Congress in DC later that month.
I believe it captures the essence of what this very important project is about. The message, which is worthwhile for any provider or payer organization, is that this kind of approach is essential to help stabilize health care, but demands the recognition of and collaboration with health plans and employers.
